Unit of Competency - Overview

 Introduction to the AustralAsian Group:

 Introduction to the International Maritime Organisation:

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) – is the United Nations specialised agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships.

 Introduction to Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW):

The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978 was adopted on 7 July 1978 and entered into force on 28 April 1984.

The main purpose of the Convention is to promote safety of life and property at sea and the protection of the marine environment by establishing in common agreement international standards of training, certification and watchkeeping for seafarers.

 Introduction to Basic Safety Training (BST):

STCW 1978, as amended and including the requirements of STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) – Chapter VI - Mandatory minimum requirements for safety familiarisation, basic training and instruction for all seafarers – Section A-VI/1 Safety Familiarisation Training requires that: Before being assigned to shipboard duties, all persons employed or engaged on a seagoing ship, other than passengers, shall receive approved familiarisation training in; Personal Survival Techniques – Section A-VI/1-1, Fire Prevention and Firefighting – Section A-VI/1-2, Elementary First Aid – Section A-VI/1-3and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility – Section A-VI/1-4.

It is also a requirement that seafarers must provide evidence of continuing competence is by completing Basic Safety Training refresher training every 5 years.

 Application:

Mandatory minimum requirements for safety familiarisation, basic training and instruction for all seafarers – Section A-VI/1 Safety Familiarisation Training before being assigned to shipboard duties, all persons employed or engaged on a seagoing ship, other than passengers.
