Understanding and appreciating this synergy between the cells and systems of the epidermis and body is a major part of understanding the skin. This course explores both the epidermal and dermal cells & systems, providing the learner with a full review of the physical, biochemical and biological systems including:

  • ■  Learn to understand of how various skin conditions manifest due to system malfunction or failure
  • ■  That the dermis is a complex part of the skin that provides structure, strength, nutrient supply and waste disposal systems
  • ■  The importance of the Fibroblast cell
  • ■  A review of the five layers of the epidermis and seven components of the dermis
Unit One

This lecture follows the principals and methodology of thinking that is corneotherapy. What we once called hyperkeratinization is now known to be faulty or poor corneocyte compaction processes, and this changes the way we will treat this skin. Our base knowledge of the keratinocyte life cycle has changed over the last 5 years. In this class I wish to share with you how the stratum corneum and barrier defence systems have changed since I wrote my first book in the early 2000’s. By following the compaction process of the keratinocyte and understanding the intricate pathway and formation of what we once called bilayers, (now known as multi lamellae lipids). We are now able to understand more about the skin that presents with barrier disorders. Learning more about how does skin become compromised and how to prevent it or improve it.

Unit Two

The skin will exhibit changes in appearance when there is deterioration in the skin barrier defense systems such as the acid mantle, multi lamellae lipids or stratum corneum structure. The negative visual appearance may be in the area of application of a leading cause such as eye shadow, dish washing liquid, allergens or pathogens. A combination of weakened skin, and chemicals will very often aggravate atopic dermatitis, or create inflammation that may pre-sent as localized heat, itchiness, and redness. In this unit of learning, we will discuss how changes in the barrier defense systems cause inflammation and influence the innate and adaptive immune systems. Poor corneocyte compaction will display as cells with a reduced hydrophobic ability, essential for barrier integrity resulting in a corneocyte that has not developed a strong hydrophobic shell. Instead, the corneocyte has a brittle and incomplete outer shell; this will result in a compromised barrier defense, an overactive innate immune system, and cellular inflammation.
