This course is available for licensed electricians and others who already have been found competent in the following units:

  • UEENEEK125A – Solve basic problems in photovoltaic energy apparatus
  • UEENEEK135A – Design grid connected power supply systems
  • UEENEEK148A – Install, configure and commission grid-connected power supply systems

These units are considered as ‘required prior learning’ for this course.

The Grid-Connected PV Systems with Battery Storage: Design and Install Course comprises online material including theory, quizzes, written answers and a System Design Task; and a 3-day practical component including theory revision and the hands-on installation of a battery system, testing, commissioning and programming selected multi-mode inverters. This course has been prepared and mapped against unit UEERE4001A* (Install, Maintain and Fault Find Battery Storage Systems for Grid Connected Photovoltaic Systems) and draft unit UEERE5001A* (Design Battery Storage Systems for Grid Connected Photovoltaic Systems).

Successful completion of the units UEERE4001A* and UEERE5001A* is not classified as an additional accreditation by the Clean Energy Council: it will be an endorsement applied to the applicant’s existing Accreditation (i.e. Design and installation of grid-connected PV systems Accreditation).

Course Structure

The course consists of two main components: online theory completed at students’ own pace and the face-to-face (3 days) component held at our GSES Training Facility in Botany, Sydney. The required work includes the online and written assessments, the 3-day Practical Course and a written open book exam.

Electricians must complete both the online and practical components to be eligible for CEC Provisional Design & Install Grid-Connected PV Systems Accreditation.

NOTE: The online theory component is recommended to be completed BEFORE attending practical training days.
If possible, we recommend students register for the face-to-face practical training before the online component is completed, this will help to secure a place on the dates required. Numbers at the practical training course are restricted for quality assurance and to maintain trainer to student ratios.

This course is designed for electricians who already hold an electrician’s qualification, and wish to further their skills by gaining a qualification to design and install grid-connected photovoltaic systems (not Stand Alone Power systems).

Prerequisites: Electrical License

To be awarded a Statement of Attainment, you must hold a current unrestricted electrical license issued by an Australian state or territory OR refer to the CEC for units which need to be completed in lieu of a license:

Electrical apprentices may enrol in this course, however they will need to show they have completed the above units in their studies already OR wait till they are issued their unrestricted license before being awards a Statement of Attainment.

Students will need to have access to the AS/NZS 5033:2014 standard to successfully complete this course (and for work in the field). This can be purchased from the SAI Global website and is available at some local libraries.

Online Component

This course has been designed to address the PV grid-connect market in Australia and is ideal for electricians who wish to expand their knowledge and skills.  The delivery mode of this course is designed for busy tradespeople who do not have the time to attend face-to-face courses to gain relevant qualifications.

With a fully flexible web-based format, the online course allows students to complete the theory in their own time.  The online course includes vital knowledge for participating in the practical component.

GSES has a team of tutors who mark the online work and as necessary supply feedback or additional technical information to the students.   GSES’ tutors are also available to be contacted by phone or email during the day.

Face-to-Face Component: 3 Day Practical Course

On completion of the majority of the online component, students then attend the practical component, which provides:

1.       Intensive hands-on installation, fault finding and commissioning experience; and

2.       Quality time with GSES trainers to review the theory; and

3.       Practical exercises as part of the competency based training outcome.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the 3-day practical course, students will have the knowledge and skills to safely work on roofs and competently install a grid connect PV system.

  • Commissioning and Decommissioning a system
  • Fault-finding on a system
  • Finer points of installation
  • Written assessments on completion of course content
Trainer to Student Ratio

Students will work in small groups and individually. One trainer is assigned to a maximum of eight students for practical activities to ensure focused time with the trainers for any additional questions or advice.

Training Outcome1.        Statement of Attainment

A Statement of Attainment will be awarded for the following Units of Competency:

  • Solve basic problems in photovoltaic energy apparatus (UEENEEK125A)
  • Design grid connected power supply systems (UEENEEK135A)
  • Install, configure and commission grid-connected power supply systems (UEENEEK148A)

Electricians who successfully complete the online and practical components can then apply to the Clean Energy Council of Australia for the Design & Installation of Grid-Connect PV Systems Accreditation.  The Clean Energy Council has information on their website indicating their information requirements to apply for Clean Energy Council Accreditation.
