Due to the multitude of forklifts in industry they are often disregarded and viewed as a machine that can be operated by a novice with no or limited experience.
Nothing could be further from the truth with forklifts accounting for a vast majority of injuries and fatalities in the work place. On investigation a lot of these incidents could have been avoided by operators with more knowledge of the technical expertise required. These may include the balance triangle and safe working loads of forklifts and their attachments.
The forklift is one of the more valuable competencies to possess. When moving on to various other equipment recognised prior learning can aid in shortening the theory component of subsequent courses.

Outline
This unit specifies the outcomes required for the operation of a powered industrial truck equipped with a mast and an elevating load carriage to which is attached a pair of fork arms or other attachment, for licensing purposes. This definition also includes a truck on which the operator is raised with the attachment for order-picking.
